RE: Refrige stopping on propane

It does occur with sufficient frequency to be checked. And don't try to correct me...you do not have the credentials to do so.

RE: Setting a HD as boot drive

Checked it again this morning. The video is separate card...must have been thinking of the laptop :o. Anyway, when booting the desktop, all loading programs show on the screen in black and white as usual, then the opening colored flying Windows screen comes up, then the screen turns blue and the words "no input" show.
Again, is all the proceding information which shows on the screen coming from BIOS or what. If BIOS might just be the HD. If the video card is dead, I would not think the colored flying Windows would show up, nor maybe all the programs loading.
The other question is still out there too....can a HD be made bootable without destroying existing data (since the boot region on the HD is separate from the data area).
Any computer experts here.....?

RE: Refrige stopping on propane

Blow out the vent pipe with high volume compressed air and clean the thermocouple with a wire brush to remove scale. If you can get to the orifice, blow it out also but do not poke anything into the orifice...they get damaged easily.
Remove the cover from the printed circuit board, unplug and reseat the connectors to and from the board and terminal strips several times to ensure contact through any crud buildup. Remove grounding screws and do the same to obtain a good ground.
Change to a new tank of propane since some suppliers permit oil crud to enter your tank when refilling. If this crud is in your system a professional cleanout might be necessary but worth a try first.
If the above items which you can easily do does not solve the issue, get a dino board.

RE: Setting a HD as boot drive

I did check with another monitor; same result. I had purchased an updated faster video board on a fantastic sale a few years back then decided it was not needed and returned it unopened. Silly me! CompUSA is out of business here...blast it. Wonder who has at good prices these days. Thanks for the info. Much appreciated.

Setting a HD as boot drive

Had a desktop computer failure (yes the old one that is still not fixed!) and believe it might be the booting HD. Since I have two other drives in the case, thought that before I take it to BB, maybe I can determine for sure what the problem might be, and actually solve the problem myself.
Currently at startup, the screen states "no input". I assume that this is caused by a bad video driver board which is part of the motherboard, or the HD is bad by not providing data to enable the screen to be written, or worse yet, a failed motherboard.
If the Motherboard was bad, I assume there would be no information at all showing up on the screen, unless this information is contained in CMOS and written to the screen to show something is wrong. Also if the video was bad, maybe this data would also not show up on the screen. Therefore hoping for the best, if the HD was causing the problem, a good HD might solve the issue.
As stated, if the HD is bad, and if I can make one of the other two existing HDs bootable (I can select which HD is the bootable drive in setup in CMOS) without destroying existing data on one of the other HDs, the problem is solved. I did manage to Norton Ghost the lost drive before total failure, so all is not lost, but this image is on one of the other HDs, and I do not know now which one!
I have checked and all board voltages are ok, and all connectors are well seated.
What would you do other than take it to the shop?

RE: How to turn off a laptop touchpad

If Windows, go to control panel, mouse, settings, then click disable on touchpad. Was driving me up a wall too, and this solved it.

RE: "swimmers itch"

FWIW Sure cure for Chiggers is clear (or painted if you are of that persuasion) fingernail polish painted over the bite. Had always heard that it kills the chigger but if the chigger is not burrowed under skin, guess it just is some sort of southern magic that works everytime...for chiggers...not the Calif ailments...e-e--e-ee-w-w-w-w nasty water there I guess. Swimming in duck droppings...no thanks...I'm take the mercury from the rivers here every time....ervery tim...evey ti...e tm....e....

RE: HP Computer is a lemon - What would you do?

Have had a Dell go bellyup, and have tied to update a Gagway but owners are locked out. DW and I both have new Toshibas, my second, and are happy. Would not buy an HP laptop, but their lab equipment is top notch in the world.

RE: New task bar icon.....

Found it! Disabled the touch pad since I was getting erroneous cursor actions; thought I might be touching the pad by mistake. The phantom icon appears when the touchpad is disabled. Was preparing to do the screen print when the light suddenly dawned! Thanks for help.

RE: New task bar icon.....

The above posts did not show until I added this post. Strange! OK, will do a screen print and will try that. It is not the icon for connections...they are there too.

RE: HP Computer is a lemon - What would you do?

Probably a wild shot, but were you on the web when it locks out? If so, try disconnecting or staying off the web, and use the computer for other stuff. Might be the computer is working and just talking to another computer on the web or at least trying to. Had similar problem with desktop but was just a trojan horsie. Like I said....a wild shot.

New task bar icon.....

Had a new icon pop up a few weeks ago, and could not determine what task it identified. Had to restore to to get rid of it.
Icon was simply a rectangle (like the shape of a monitor) and had a red circle with a red line across the circle....similar to the symbol above a no parking sign symbol or no walking symbol or whatever...meaning "no or don't". After restoring the icon is gone from the task bar and also gone from properties list of icons. It reappears from time to time, but I cannot determine what action causes it, and putting the curser on the icon does nothing. I had looked at properties before the restore operation, and the task identified by this symbol said "unidentified".
What is it?

RE: Chainsaw won't cut straight

Had same problem. Solved by replacing the chain and filing the bar guide flat. Had old chain sharpened but teeth on one side were still longer than the other. Worked fine after sharpening though, but the new full bite chain was perfect. Would suggest getting a new chain from a quality chainsaw retail outlet that would fit your bar.

RE: why do people do this?

When carrying an insanely large amount of cash or other valuable commodity, always leave several car lengths so that you have an out if someone tries to get in your car and rob you, or worse, assault you. I usually pull right up on folks bumpers.

RE: Registry change

Jim
Thanks....was suspecting that was the problem...or as it were, non problem. Good to get it confirmed. Was not aware that the later version had this feature. I disallowed the regiatry change so I am not sure what if any good has come from the updates I have made .
Many thanks.

Registry change

Lately Spybot has started identifying registry changes on my laptop, which have never been shown before.
If I download an update to a scanning tool, like AdAware, or do a restore or for other operations, a window pops up and identifies that a registry change has been requested and asks for approvall to the registry change.
Has the Spybot program changed, which now identifies this registry change, or is there a problem (trojan) that has infected the computer and is attempting to get registry changes made?
DW had the same occur on her laptop last night and was the first time it has happened to her.
